Recently I’ve noticed a massive increase in popularity for the “any chilled sparkling reds?” question at the wine bar I work at, and most of the time it’s a sparkling red they’re looking for.
Whilst doing me research for this exact post I stumbled across a survey by leading alcohol e-commerce platform Drizly, they found out that 31% of Americans state that red wines, such as Lambrusco and Gamay, would be their go-to bevvy for the 2023 summer (source. Forbes & Drizly.com).
Interesting that.
In many ways, you could link the current hype for sparkling and chilled reds in the UK and the US directly to the ongoing, upward growth of natural wine. I mean, light-bodied chillable reds are the backbone of what it means to drink natural wine in the first place; it’s a genuinely enjoyable way of consuming lighter red varieties, the freshness is unbeatable and it also goes against all odds of what drinking red wine is ‘supposed to be’.
Now that the summer is fully upon us and temperatures are soaring here in the UK, it’s no surprise casual wine drinkers are more interested in chilled and sparkling red wines.
I too love drinking sparkling and chilled reds, so here are 10 of my go-to’s you gotta try this summer!
