Welcome to the paid Natural Swill wineletter!

Last year during all four weeks of September, Emily and I embarked on a road trip around Europe to learn about different cultures, and take some well-needed time away from the constant shit-show we call modern-day life.

The route was as follows; Callais in France to get across to mainland Europe from the UK, Brussels, Alsace, Mosel, Bavarian Alps, Salzburg, Burgenland, Lake Bled, Veneto, Lake Garda, Bologna, Lerici, Cinque Terre, Genova, Nice, Cassis, Beaujolais and then back home to Manchester.

Let’s start with some context.

The first winery stop was Koppitsch winery in Burgenland, Austria - a winemaking region just one hour’s drive east to the city of Graz.

Three reasons why I wanted to meet Alex and Maria Koppitsch so badly;

  • Their ‘Pretty Nuts’ Pét-Nat rosé was the first wine I ever posted on the Natural Swill Instagram (see the below picture).

  • Maria has always been so incredibly friendly whenever we spoke online.

  • Most importantly - Koppitsch wines are the perfect example of what my favourite style of wine is all about - light, fruit-focused, fun, energetic and charismatic.

So, we arrived at their family home on a warm, clammy Tuesday afternoon, feeling fresh after finishing a 20-box of McDonald’s chicken nuggets en route.
